Lisbon sweeps Oak Grove Letterman’s track meet

The Bronco girls’ track team finally caught and passed their rivals from Milnor-Wyndmere-Lidgerwood.  In three previous match-ups, MWL had taken home the team trophy while the Broncos had come up just short with three second-place finishes.  This time the fourth time was the “charm” as Coach Cori Thielges’ squad outscored MWL 175-172 for their first title of the season.

The Bronco boys won their fourth title in as many starts with their 177 points, while Oak Grove edged Richland 105-98 for second place.

The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Ricky Roman, Elliott Olerud, Blake Mallett, and Logan Carlblom joined junior hurdler Nathan Dykema as state qualifiers.  Dykema breezed to an impressive win in the 110 hurdles.

Lisbon’s Ashley Berg was the outstanding girl performer at the meet as Berg won the long jump, 100 hurdles, and 300 hurdles all with state qualifying efforts.

Veronica Munkeby set a personal record in the high jump with her state qualifying leap of 5’5”.  Munkeby needed every inch as sophomore teammate, Kali Olson, cleared 5’3” to finish in second place.

Other first place finishers for Lisbon were:  BreAnn Thorfinnson - javelin, 400 relay team of Hillary Birchem, Karlene Lorenz, Taryn Wagner, Karli Freeberg, and the 800 relay team of Zach Peterson, Derek Hiam, Brandon Lee, and Adam Coykendall.

Lisbon competed at the Fargo Shanley American Legion Meet on April 25 and are at the Wahpeton Kiwanis Meet on Tuesday, April 29.
