Local tracksters do well at meets
by Joe Howell
The Lisbon track and field teams were busy trying to make up for lost time and track meets as the Broncos competed on back to back days on April 27 and 28 in Moorhead and Wahpeton.
The Broncos were to compete in Wahpeton for the Owen Jensen meet on the 28th, but the Fargo Shanley American Legion Meet was postponed from April 24 to April 27 because of a foot of snow in the metro area. At both sites volunteers pitched in and shoveled snow off so that the running and field event athletes could compete. In Wahpeton, the javelin and discus were not held because of snow and a tremendous amount of standing water in those areas. Wahpeton had been socked in with 19 inches of snow.
Hillary Birchem’s toss in the discus of 117’6” at the Fargo Shanley American Legion Meet, and Anthony Finstad racing to the finish line in the 3200-meter run at the Kiwanis Meet, were the highlights of the two meets. Time is starting to dwindle fast for dates to qualify for the state meet, and athletes from the across the state are giving their all to beat the standard in their events.
The Broncos finished fifth (boys) and sixth (girls) at the Shanley meet. Lisbon recorded four first-place finishes, as Ashley Berg won both of the hurdle races and Logan Carlblom and Veronica Munkeby won their jump-offs to earn their gold medals in the high jump. The only tie that is broken in the high jump is first place. In both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, there was a tie between a Lisbon jumper and one of their opponents.
The bar is moved up if both jumpers make their attempts and is lowered if both miss. This process continues until a champion has been determined.
Lisbon finished as a team in second place behind West Fargo at the Kiwanis Meet. It marked the second straight meet that the girls’ squad handled MWL as the Warriors placed third.
The 400 relay team of Ricky Roman, Elliott Olerud, Blake Mallett, Logan Carlblom, and junior distance runner Jayce Seelig in the 1600, and Veronica Munkeby in the high jump, were the Broncos’ only first-place winners in Wahpeton.
Most importantly, the Broncos needed to compete. Lisbon had lost four outdoor meets in the month of April and the track squads were spinning their wheels in place without facing competition. Practice gets boring and very repetitious if an athlete does not get to test themselves against a quality opponent.
Lisbon is in action today at the Fargo Rotary meet at Fargo South High School. On Saturday, May 10, the Broncos will compete in the Jamestown Al Cassell Relays.
Shortly before the Owen Jensen Wahpeton Kiwanis Track Meet, there was a naming ceremony. The track at Frank Vertin Field will now be known as the Owen and Dee Jensen track. The Jensens had coached track from 1974 through 2002 at NDSCS and had touched and shaped hundreds of young lives through their teaching and coaching at the two year school.
