Maggie Walters, owner of the building at 411 Main Street, Lisbon, (the building which housed Dale’s Jewelry for the past 45 years), and her daughter, Diana, visited Lisbon last week to view the progress of the renovation of Walters’ store building.
Walters, who lives in the San Franciso Bay area, spends some time each summer at a lake house on Pelican Lake in northern Minnesota. During those vacations, she has enjoyed occasional visits to Lisbon.
With the retirement of Dorothy (Dale) Stetson and her daughter Susan (Dale) Hegle and the closing of their jewelry store, Walters was forced to make a decision about what to do with her building. After careful consideration, Walters decided that she wanted to give something back to the community which her mother and grandparents had called home. Read the rest of this entry »

Editor’s note: This is just a small synopsis of Verona’s history. To really get the feel for the town of Verona and its inhabitants, join them for their 125th celebration.
Verona, “A Small Town With a Big Heart,” is busy preparing for a big increase in population for the weekend of Friday, July 4-Sunday, July 6 as residents, past and present, celebrate the town’s 125th Birthday. A separate story has the schedule of events.
Those returning will be surprised to find most of the stores on Main Street gone with a new city park in its place. Many residents and businesses from Verona and area towns opened their hearts and contributed to the success of this project which was spearheaded by Katherine Plessner. When visitors tour Verona, take the time to walk through the park, check the memorial and its list of contributors located on the dedication wall under the picnic shelter.
From its humble beginnings to the present day, Verona remains a city to be proud of because of the spirit of its people, It truly is “A Small Town With A Big Heart.” Read the rest of this entry »

Studies show that more than 90 percent of all people who live to age 72 will need blood or blood products during their life. In fact, every three seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Two-thirds of men and women age 17 and over are eligible to donate, yet fewer than 10 percent of these healthy adults take time to give blood.
The biggest reason people don’t donate is that no one has asked them. Consider yourself asked! Become a lifesaver by donating at Lisbon’s next blood drive on Tuesday, July 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Call Kay at 683-4920 for an appointment.

Lisbon 2, Enderlin 1
On June 18, Lisbon played host to Enderlin in a twin bill. Lisbon got a very good performance from pitcher Nathan Qual as he pitched a complete game two-hitter. Nathan gave up one run which was earned, walked two batters, and struck out nine, to improve his record to two wins and one loss. Offensively, Nathan Qual led the attack going two for three with an RBI. Derek Jones was one for three with an RBI, and Reed Huether was one for two with a run scored. Lisbon played a perfect game defensively, as they Read the rest of this entry »
