Grain harvest is approximately 80% complete in Ransom County, according to Rick Taylor, manager, Sheldon office of Plains, Grain, and Agronomy.

“There’s real nice wheat this year,” said Taylor. He added that the wheat is average or above.

“Prices are good and expenses are a lot higher,” he said.

Sheldon has more row crops than grain, according to Taylor. “The row crops could use some rain,” he added.

The grain harvest is almost complete in the Lisbon area, according to Mike Thompson, manager at the Lisbon Elevator. “The yields are very good, 60-70 bushels/acre although the protein wasn’t very high,” said Thompson. Read the rest of this entry »

U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan visits with a group of citizens at the school building at the McLeod museum on Monday, August 18.

by Janet Hansen

Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) on Monday, August 18 met with members of the Sheyenne Valley Grazing Association and other interested area citizens, to listen to any concerns which they might wish to share. He also provided an update on his work in Congress, including the implementation of country-of-origin labeling and funding that he secured to control leafy spurge on the Dakota Prairie Grasslands.

Todd Anderson, Sheyenne Valley Grazing Association, welcomed Dorgan and State  Representative Pam Gulleson, to McLeod. Dorgan praised the McLeod Historical Preservation Society for the good job they have done in preserving history at their museum. He enjoyed hearing stories from former students of the school in which the meeting was being held. He noted the fine restoration job which had been done on the 102-year-old building.

The first area of concern was the high prices of oil and gas. “Doubling the price of oil and gas in the last year is not justified by supply and demand,” said Dorgan. He went on to give the following suggestions of ways to work toward a solution: Shut down excess speculation in the futures market; produce more oil in this country; commit to finding new energy sources; and conserve.

Dorgan inquired as to grazing conditions in the Sheyenne National Grasslands area. He was told that a recent rainfall, which came at a crucial time, has improved grazing conditions a lot. The fact that commodity prices are good but input prices for such things as fertilizer, gas, and seed are also going up drastically, was also discussed. Read the rest of this entry »

Shawn Mayfield and Jenny Krause, Kadrmas, Lee, and Jackson, met with the Ransom County Board of Commissioners at their Tuesday, August 19 meeting, to discuss plans for a new county road shop. The county has budgeted up to $1,100,000 for the project from special and general funds.

Jerry Lamb, Ransom County Road Supervisor, had a rough sketch of a 100’ by 200’ clear-space metal building which he felt would suit the county’s needs. He suggested that floor heat, 10-inch insulation, and a ventilation system be included in the construction project.

Discussion was held on whether it would be better to construct a metal building or one with pre-cast concrete walls. Kevin Bishop, chairman of the board, stated that steel buildings can be constructed quickly and look nice, but steel walls are not as sturdy as concrete, which might be a factor when working with large equipment in the building. However, concrete construction is considerably more expensive. Lamb suggested that wooden walls with steel on top might be a way to go as well.  Read the rest of this entry »

On July 26, the 4th Annual Al (Toon) Johnson Head Start Motorcycle Run was held.  It was a huge success again this year, with the Ransom/Sargent County Head Start program receiving $4,200.  This run is sponsored by the Liq’R Pigz motorcycle club.

This year 136 people registered for the run. Participants were treated to watching a car burn out until a tire popped, and had the opportunity to guess how long the car would run before the engine blew.  Todd Sagvold was the lucky winner of a cash prize along with Twins’ tickets.

The group then left the Eagle’s Club in Lisbon and took a journey to the south.  The first stop was Kurt’s Bar in Forman.  Next, the group moved on to the Lariat Bar in Rutland, the Geneseo Bar, 4 Corners Bar in Wyndmere, and the Side Street Saloon in Milnor.  Door prizes were given out at each stop.  These prizes were donated by the participating bars.  The run ended at the Cattleman’s Club in Lisbon with prizes, a burn-out pit, and music.  Lynn Anderson, Lisbon, was the winner of the poker hand.

Prior to the day of the run, the Liq’R Pigz sold spots on a gun board, a “ladies” board, and raffle tickets.  The winners of these prizes were:  gun board – Brad Dick; Reann Kaszmarki – gift certificate donated by Lisbon Super Valu; John Edman – 1/16 scale Case Magnum tractor donated in memory of Al Johnson by Titan Machinery; Kory Jalbert – Graphic Design package donated by Dana Jacobson; Jerry Hiam – 357 Magnum pistol; and Shannon Thompson – Riverside Resort/Casino package donated by Riverside Resort and Casino, Laughlin, NV.

Other sponsors of this event include Lisbon Eagles Club, Wendell Wolters, JDL Kennels, Grotberg Electric Inc., Edman Ins., Welton Tire, RDO, Cornerstone Bank, Napa Auto Parts, Spud’s Service, Duane Johnson, Gordy’s Grill and Fill, and Lisbon Super Valu.
