ArnoldJohnson_bwFuneral services for Arnold J. Johnson, 87, Lisbon, N.D., were held Friday, August 1, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Rev. Norm Anderson officiated. 

Arnie Johnson, 87, passed away on July 26, 2008, at his home in Lisbon.  Arnie was born on January 2, 1921, in Lisbon to John and Frieda (Newburg) Johnson.  His parents were both immigrants from Sweden.  They lived on a farm 11 miles east of Lisbon on Hwy. 27.  Arnold had one sister, Helen, and one brother, Harold.  He went to Shenford Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1938.  He then went to Fargo where he attended Interstate Business School and worked at Ivers Funeral Home.

Arnie later moved to St. Paul, where he met Marjorie Code.  She was also from Lisbon, a 1940 LHS graduate.  They were married in Moorhead, Minn., in 1942 and lived in Minneapolis where Arnie worked at the National Battery Company and Marge with Kraft Cheese Company.

In 1942 Arnie enlisted in the Army and served  for three years.  He was stationed in Skagway, Alaska; Panama; and New Orleans, La. 

Arnie and Marge Johnson moved to Lisbon and purchased the Fountain Inn Restaurant in 1947, which they operated for five years. Arnie then managed the Lisbon Red Owl Grocery Store for ten years.  They moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., but returned to Lisbon one year later when they bought the Red Owl store in 1962.  It was located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Main Street, where Pizza Ranch now is.  Arnie operated the business until retiring in 1984.

Arnie and Marge had five children: Carol, Roger, Mary, Laurie, and Charlie.  Carol and Roger accidently drowned in the Sheyenne River in 1954. Arnie was a member and lay leader at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Lisbon.  He was a member of the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department, VFW, Lisbon Civic and Commerce, and the Masonic Lodge.  They enjoyed the 13 Bridge Club and spending time at their summer cabin on Lake Sallie at Detroit Lakes, Minn.

Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Harold, his sister Helen Engst, daughter Carol, and son Roger. 

He is survived by his wife, Marge, Lisbon; three children, Mary (Doug) Modine, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Laurie (Brady) Kelly, Lisbon, and Charlie (Sheryl)  Johnson, Victorville, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers for the funeral were Paul Kelly, Ryan Kelly, John Kelly, Eric Moellenkamp, Craig Moellenkamp, and Ron Engst. 

Music was provided by organist Jan Hansen and soloist Joan Montgomery.

Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, was in charge of arrangements.
