Carol Olson, 79, Jamestown, N.D., died Monday, July 28, 2008 at Ave Marie Village in Jamestown.
Carol Svegaarden was born on October 25, 1928, the daughter of Ludvig and Christine (Rygg) Svegaarden, in Clifford, N.D. She was baptized on November 18, 1928, at Norman Lutheran Church, Clifford, and confirmed on June 19, 1943, at Mayville Lutheran Church, Mayville. After graduating from Mayville High School in 1946, she attended Dakota Business College in Fargo, where she met Norman L. Olson. They were united in marriage on June 14, 1947, at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo, and lived in Fargo; Moorhead, Minn.; Mandan, and Jamestown. She worked as a church secretary at First Lutheran Church in Mandan, and then at the United Presbyterian Church, Jamestown, until her retirement in 1984.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Hope Circle, and a Stephen Minister. She was instrumental in establishing a Widow’s Support Group after the loss of her husband in 1991.
She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, shopping with her daughters and granddaughters, Saturday morning breakfasts out with her family, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her sense of humor and her caring and compassionate nature will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
Carol is survived by her five daughters and sons-in-law, Sonja and Richard Johnston, Wheaton, Ill., Renae and Richard Southwick, Fergus Falls, Minn., Marcia and James Gums, Jamestown, Terri Lynn and Paul Weigel, Mandan, and Penny and Michael Landscoot, Jamestown; one son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Bernie Olson, Edmond, Okla.; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Grandchildren include Dan Johnston, Wheaton, Ill.; Andrea (Christopher) Gleeson, Champaign, Ill.; David Olson, Duncan, Okla.; Christy (Les) Grino, Del City, Okla.; Alison (Jeff) Wolf, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Jeremy (Destiny) Southwick, Fergus Falls, Minn.; Shanna (Keith) Geigle, West Fargo; Nadine (Jason) Miller, Shakopee, Minn.; Matthew Gums, Maple Grove, Minn.; Adam (Tracie) Weigel, Punta Gorda, Fla.; Ashley (Cecil Roth III) Weigel, Mandan; Candace Landscoot, St. Paul, Minn.; and Amber (Tim) Hartmann, Jamestown. Great-grandchildren are Lexie and Ronin Grino, Cecil Maxwell Roth IV, Lucas Geigle, and Alexander Southwick.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Pastor Rich Fitzer officiating.
Burial was at Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, was in charge of arrangements.
