Someone on an all-terrain vehicle has reportedly used some type of herbicide to kill prairie orchids in an area located just west of McLeod in Sandoun Township of Ransom County.

In mid-July, biologists hired by the National Heritage Program, under the National Parks and Recreation Department, were sent to chart the status of the western prairie fringed orchid on the Sheyenne National Grasslands. In the process, they came across approximately 25 orchid plants in a ditch along a township road located just outside the grasslands.

The plants, located near one of the test plots being monitored by the biologists, caught the group’s attention because they were wilting. The heads, which had been in full flower, were drooping and the plants were obviously dying. Upon closer inspection it was noted that there were all-terrain vehicle tracks leading from a township road to each individual plant in the ditch. The plants appeared to have been sprayed with some type of herbicide. Read the rest of this entry »

The North Dakota Department of Health announced recently that the City of Lisbon water system has been awarded a 2007 Water Fluoridation Quality Award from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride in the water to a level that is optimal for preventing tooth decay.  The award recognizes those communities that have maintained a consistent level of optimally fluoridated water for the calendar year.

Community water fluoridation has been recognized by CDC as one of ten great public health achievements of the 20th century.  CDC recommends water fluoridation as a safe, effective, and inexpensive method of preventing tooth decay.  Studies have shown that tooth decay is prevented among all age groups, not just children.

The Bronco volleyball team won its third straight match of the season with a 3-1 win over home standing Enderlin.  The Broncos have won all three of their matches by scores of 3-1.  Although the scores indicate that all three of Lisbon’s wins were identical, that is far from the truth.

Lisbon used a 6-2 offensive alignment in their season opening victory at LaMoure.  The 6-2 set in their second match of the season resulted in a game 1 loss to Richland on Thursday, September 4.  Coach Amy Lyons juggled her line-up by switching to a 5-1 offensive set and the Broncos played better for the rest of the evening and defeated the Colts.

Lisbon won games 2, 3, and 4 against Richland by a combined score of 75–43.  Lyons commented on her team’s switch to a different line-up and the impact that it had on the match.  “We opened in a 6-2 and looked lost.  Our 5-1 really clicked and we feel really fortunate that we have players that can and are willing to change positions easily for the benefit of the team.”  “I feel that this year’s squad’s flexibility will only help us in future matches and it should make us harder to prepare for.”

It is still early in the year, and the Broncos will continue to work on cleaning up the areas that they have been weak in.  Service errors totaled 18 against the Colts and play was not consistent throughout the four-game match.

Strengths demonstrated by LHS were the blocking tandem of Veronica Munkeby and Courtney Bischof.  Tracie Heacox came in and provided some strong serves.

The confidence level of this year’s Bronco team will only grow as it matures throughout the season.

Lisbon raised its record to 3-1 with a 3-1 victory at Enderlin.  The Broncos were up and down during their match with the Eagles, and Enderlin’s hitting had the Broncos scrambling to pass the pass to set up their offense.

Taryn Wagner led the Broncos in digs with 13 while Veronica Munkeby was joined by Ashley Berg and Kali Olson to record double digits in kills.  Munkeby put away 14 while the explosive Berg added 12 and Olson pounded 11.

Setter Susie Lyons recorded a season high of 40 assists.

The Broncos opened both their district play and tournament play last week.  Lisbon hosted FCT on Thursday, Sept. 11 and competed at the Central Cass tournament on September 13.

Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah is a strong team and should have given the Broncos all they needed to improve.

The Casselton-based tournament always features some of the best squads in the state.  Lisbon, the two-time defending Region 1 champion, should get a great feel or where they are after the Central Cass tournament.

On September 20, Coach Amy Lyons and her crew will compete at the Valley City tournament, and again this will be a very good early season test for the Broncos.

Lisbon will not compete in a tournament again until October 4, when the Broncos and Enderlin host their annual tournament.

On October 10 and 11, Lisbon will compete in the premier tournament of the year when they travel to Des Lacs-Burlington to face the best of the west.

Third ranked and unbeaten, Park River made its first ever visit to Sandager Field, and the Aggies left Ransom County licking their wounds.  The Broncos raised their record to 2-1 with a 39-0 shut-out of Park River.

Lisbon is now 2-0 lifetime in its football match-ups with the Aggies.

Defense was the key to this victory as the Broncos hounded, harassed, hit, and caused turnovers in their second ever match-up with Park River.

Coach Robert Bubach commented on his team’s defensive effort.  “We did a much better job of reacting and coming up and stopping the things that Park River wanted to accomplish on offense.  I thought that we did a really nice job, and because of our improvement, we benefited from three turnovers.  Jade Huether and Nathan Dykema recorded interceptions, and Jonny Carter recovered a fumble caused by bit hit delivered by Matt Spiekermeier.  Jordan Stenson had a very nice game from his defensive tackle position.”

Lisbon limited the Aggies to just 90 yards of total offense with 81 coming via the rush.

The first quarter ended in a zero-zero tie, but Lisbon used little time to establish its dominance starting in the second quarter.

Elliott Olerud, Spencer Mairs, and Brandon Schell had nice nights running the ball for the Broncos.  Olerud totaled 58 yards in 3 carries and two touchdowns, Mairs gained 53 yards on four caries, and Schell’s total of 91 yards came on 21 carries.

“Our backfield right now is very tough,” commented Bubach after the game, plus we appear to have a passing attack this year with either Josh Nims or Adam Coykendall at quarterback.”

“We have some very capable offensive lineman, especially in Brent Durkin, but we need to come together and gel or mesh as a unit.  Our decision making of whom to block is causing our offense some problems,” commented Bubach.

Bubach commented on the health of his team.  “Other than Josh Nims, who suffered a calf injury in the Valley City game, we are in good shaped headed into the Larimore game.”

Schell ran in two touchdowns and was on the receiving end of a 13-yard pass from Josh Nims for his third touchdown.

Nims and Adam Coykendall both looked sharp steering the Bronco offense to its season high of 39 points.

Scoring

1st quarter: No scoring

Spencer Mairs and Dillon Bishop were on the receiving end of Josh Nims passes for nine and 34 yards.

Second quarter:

The Broncos used five plays before Olerud scored on his six-yard touchdown run.  A 34-yard pass completion to Dillon Bishop was the big play of the drive.

PAT pass was incomplete.

Schell’s touchdown run of 17 yards ended a four-play, 38-yard scoring drive.  Coykendall’s run of 15 yards brought the Bronco’s within scoring range for Schell.

PAT – run failed

Third Quarter:

Nims hit a streaking Schell out of the backfield and the Broncos lead increased to 18.

Nathan Dykema’s 11-yard reception from Nims was part of this 29-yard scoring drive.

The PAT pass was incomplete.

Schell again scored but this time on a 21-yard run.  Mairs’ zig-zag run of 24 yards was the biggest play of this scoring drive.

Sophomore, Zach Peterson added 12 yards on a burst up the middle.

The PAT kick by Bishop was good and Lisbon led 25-0.

4th Quarter:

Olerud swept the right end on a reverse from 48 yards and the PAT kick was no good.

The Broncos and Aggies flooded the field with their reserves and Lisbon’s second, third, and fourth units dominated play.

The future looks bright at quarterback not only for this year with senior, Nims and junior, Coykendall, but sophomore, Nathan Qual did a nice job of running the offense.

Nims’ sprint down the left sideline resulted in a 35-yard touchdown.

On the PAT, freshman, Hunter Mairs scored on a run.

The 8th annual Saddle up for St Jude’s Trail Ride/fundraiser day was held on a beautiful Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Pine Hill Ranch, owned and operated by Eugene and RoseMarie Gregor, of rural Milnor. The grand total profit this year comes to $7,411.50.

Monetary donations were accepted, as were item donations to be used towards raffle prizes, door prizes, and auction sales.

Over 200 horses and riders participated in the ride, and even more took part in the pancake/sausage breakfast, making new friends, as well as reconnecting with old ones, buggy and horseback rides, auction, potluck supper, door prizes, socializing, and camping. All proceeds from the days events benefit the St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis, TN, helping youth, 18 and under, who suffer from catastrophic illnesses. St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital has treated well over 20,000 children from across the US and more than 60 foreign countries since it opened in 1962. Information discovered at St Jude’s is freely shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. One example of the success of the research is the survival rate of all patients of acute lymphocytic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer. In 1962, only four percent of the children survived the disease. Today, it is eighty percent. The hospital treats children without regard to race, religion, creed, or ability to pay.
