Lisbon’s No Name Players will close their 2008 season at the Lisbon Opera House with four hilarious performances of “The Last Gladiator.” This play will be performed from Thursday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 12.

This two-act comedy by Martin Follose, that takes place in ancient Rome, involves all sorts of intrigue along with the usual attempt to get the emperor’s daughter to marry someone she doesn’t want. The result is side-splitting action that is fun for the entire family.

Chuck Long does double duty by both directing and acting this time around.

Other veteran No Name Players in this play include Josh Hinkemeyer, Darline Levang, Tanya Birklid, Lynsee Langsdon, Kathryn Smith, Mike Dick, Kieran Hall, Connie Radcliffe, Carmen Ross, Kathy Wiltse, Nicole Smith, Lance Gulleson, and Brad Ellingson. Carla Huether is the one newcomer to the opera house stage for this play and No Name Junior player Tyus Calloway and Daniel Sagvold will also appear as extras.

The Thursday and Saturday performances have a 7:30 p.m. curtain time and the Sunday performance is a 2:30 p.m.  matinee. In addition to the play, Friday evening’s event starts with a dinner theater catered by The Stake Out.

Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. with the curtain going up on the play at 7:30.

Advance tickets are available at Sheyenne Valley Drug, Ho-den-attes, The Ransom County Gazette Office and Lisbon Pharmacy, all in Lisbon or by calling 701-683-5119. If any tickets remain, they will be available at the door prior to the performances.

All proceeds from the play go toward rehabilitation of the Opera House building. The theater was made handicap accessible with the addition of an elevator in 2006.

After a few routine household duties, the board of commissioners Tuesday, Sept. 16 meeting was recessed and a meeting of the Ransom County Park Board called to order. Mike Martin, board chairman, presided over the meeting, which centered around the board’s 2009 budget.

Martin asked Connie Gilbert, county auditor, to provide the park board with a list of grants which have been awarded by the park board. It was discussed that, at one point, the park board had accumulated approximately $31,000.00 in its reserve fund. It was decided to use those funds to award grants to county entities which applied for park and recreation funds. By awarding a considerable number of grants over the years, the reserve fund has now been reduced to just under $4,000.00.  Read the rest of this entry »

History was made by this year’s Lisbon Bronco volleyball team at Central Cass.  The Broncos won their first ever “Volley in the Valley Tournament”.  Lisbon edged the Squirrels of Central Cass in game one of their championship match in an exhausting overtime set of 31-29.  The Broncos also won the second game to clinch their first ever CC tournament and also their first tournament championship of this year.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, Lisbon opened District 1 regular season play, and the Broncos dumped FCT 3-1 in a match played in the Bronco gym.

Kali Olson had a fantastic night as she led Lisbon in kills with 15.  As in with most team sports, often the little things are overlooked by the fans.  Coach Amy Lyons employed a double block on FCT’s best hitter, Kali Lueck, and the results were very beneficial to the Bronco defense.  Taryn Wagner and Veronica Munkeby were the primary block team against Lueck. The impressive season that the Lisbon boy’s cross country team has been having is being noticed by coaches around the state of North Dakota.  The Broncos continue to be ranked as the number 2 team in the state behind defending state champion, New Town, but three individual Bronco runners were also ranked in the top 10.

Jayce Seelig, Anthony Finstad, and Connor Stotts were voted into the top 10 on September 11 as the fifth, ninth, and tenth best runners in the boy’s division.  The importance of three or four runners finishing in the top 20 at the state meet can not be minimized.  If the Broncos are to go low with their score at the state meet, this is a good thing in cross country.  Lisbon will have a chance to upset New Town and at worst finish no lower than second place at state.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Broncos traveled to their first ever cross country meet held in Milbank, SD.  Despite a 1-2 finish by Lisbon seniors Jayce Seelig and Anthony Finstad, the Broncos finished second in the team race to host Milbank.

Milbank posted a team score of 43 compared to Lisbon’s total of 50.  Only four runners’ places were totaled for the team scores at this meet.

“Great meet, and we had Seelig and Finstad both break 17 minutes for the first time this year.  Our team, and especially Seelig and Finstad, are enjoying the fruits of their labors.”  Coach Phil Martin commented about his squads after the Milbank meet.

“The Broncos ran without Keanan Kopp as he has been battling the flu.

We are looking forward to our meet at Valley City on the 20th, and we compete at Fergus Falls on this Thursday, Sept. 25.”

Team Scores – 20 teams competing

Team scores in South Dakota meets are based on four-man teams.  In North Dakota, the top five runners places are added up for a school’s team score.

An animal has appeared to have clawed bark from a tree in the backyard of Darrell and Carol Odegaard’s residence on Forest Street. The claw marks go up about 15 ft.

Early Monday morning, September 15, Odegaard walked into his back yard expecting to pick up fallen apples on the ground. Although there are usually a dozen apples or more on the ground, there were none. A nearby Linden tree had claw marks on it. The bark was stripped from the lower part of the tree and followed upward to the upper part of the tree.

Odegaard said the side door on his garage was nudged open, also. Nothing was missing from the garage. Read the rest of this entry »

Lisbon’s offensive line led by senior offensive guard, Brent Durkin, paved the way for the Broncos’ third victory of the season against just one loss. The Broncos pounded out 399 yards of total offense with 218 being carried by all-state junior running back, Brandon Schell.

Ends Dillon Bishop and Nathan Dykema, tackles Jordan Stenson and Derek Wunderlich, guards Kasey Groettum and Durkin, and center Austin Wimer, make up the offensive line that helps spring the Bronco backfield for the chunks of yardage that they have gained this season.
