Lisbon’s District 1 regular season dipped to 1-1 with a 3-2 loss to visiting Wyndmere on September 18. These two schools played in the District 1 championship match last fall, and the Warriors proved that their victory was no fluke.
The Broncos opened game 1 flat, and Wyndmere jumped out to an imposing 9-1 lead and coasted home with a game 1 victory at 25-14.
In game two, Lisbon jumped out to an early lead and won 25-22, and in game three the Broncos hammered the Warriors 25-6.
Lisbon made a mistake in game four and assumed that they were going to win the match. Wyndmere is a very scrappy team and they out-hustled the Broncos for a 28-26 overtime victory.
Lyons commented after the match, “we need to put away a team when we have them down. What a career that Ronni (Munkeby) has had. Of course Veronica has had a great career but she has also had some great teammates to help her reach this special level.”
In the deciding game 5, Wyndmere prevailed by a score of 15-13.
Lisbon won both the JV and C matches.

Lisbon competed in the Valley City Optimist tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20 with mixed results.
In pool play, the Broncos hammered two weak teams in Midkota and Killdeer but lost to regional rival, Northern Cass 2-0.
The idea of pool play is for teams to earn their way into the championship bracket, and the meet manager usually brackets the stronger teams in different pools.
Lisbon and Northern Cass both advanced to championship tournament play, with the Broncos sweeping Oakes 2-0 before falling 2-1 to eventual tournament champion, Dickinson Trinity in the quarterfinals.

The Jags are a solid team. Northern Cass won their own 15-team invitational earlier this year and are the favorite to advance to the state tournament this year.
Northern Cass featured “a frontline of good hitters with a very scrappy back row. This makes for a great team,” were comments made by Coach Lyons after the match.
Lisbon eliminated Northern Cass from Region 1 tournament action with a victory over the Jags in the semifinals last season.

“We came out and put the hammer down in game 1 and Oakes hung their heads just enough for us to escape with a win in game 2,” commented Lyons after the match.
It marked the second straight week that Oakes and Lisbon faced each other in tournament play. The week before, Lisbon had defeated Oakes 2-1 in the Central Cass tournament.

Dickinson Trinity 20 25 20
These two schools faced each other in the state semifinals in 2007 with Lisbon sweeping the Titans.
The Broncos again jumped out to an early lead with a 25-20 victory in game 1. The Titans evened the match with a 25-21 game-2 victory.
Game three was a dandy with Trinity escaping with an overtime victory with a score of 20-18.
Trinity is again having a solid season as the Titans placed second to defending state champion, Kenmare, at the Hazen Coal Classic tournament.
“We had a solid match against a very good team and we were the only team to win a game from Trinity,” commented Lyons.
