Lisbon celebrated homecoming in style with a 47-0 win over visiting Maple Valley – Enderlin on September 26.
Outside Bronco linebacker, Jade Huether scooped up a fumble by Maple Valley-Enderlin and raced untouched for a 49 yard touchdown run on the third play of the game. Dillop Bishop added the point after touchdown and Lisbon led 7-0.
The Broncos bounced back from their second loss of the season to raise their overall record to 4-2 and their Region 1A record to 1-1. The road ahead did not get any easier for Lisbon as the Broncos made their first appearance in Linton on October 3 since the fall of 1970. The Falcons of Maple Valley – Enderlin entered Sandager Park with a 3-1 record and were 1-0 in the region.
Led by talented runningback, AJ Von Bank, the Falcons had defeated Cavalier, LaMoure, and Langdon but were missing starting quarterback, Kayl Hamre. Von Bank rushed for 75 yards but MVE had too many turnovers against Lisbon.
Sophomore defensive end, Blake Mallett’s fumble recovery, set-up Lisbon’s next score. Fullback, Zach Peterson rumbled into the endzone from 10 yards out with 4:19 remaining in the first period and Bishop’s kick again was good and Lisbon led 14-0.
Bronco quarterback, Josh Nims connected with Bishop on a 42 yard completion but this scoring drive was stopped by the Falcon defense.
Defensive back, Elliott Olerud’s interception set up again gave Lisbon good field position. Bishop hammered the Falcon’s quarterback and Olerud picked off the errant pass. The Falcons again kept Lisbon out of the endzone.
Jordan Stenson’s block of an MVE punt with a hustling, Jonny Carter recovering the ball at the Falcon 19 yard line put Lisbon back on the scoreboard.
Brandon Schell blasted into the endzone from one yard out after a 18 yard Schell run and a Bishop kick made the halftime score 21-0 Broncos.
Peterson’s punt return of 31 yards to the Falcon 46 yard line was followed by a 45 yard run by Spencer Mairs. On the next play, Schell’s second touchdown run made score 27-0 early in the second half.
Bishop and Olerud combined for another interception. Bishop again clobbered the Falcon quarterback and Olerud again came down with the errant pass.
Runs of 17 yards by Schell and 19 by Olerud was followed by Schell’s 13 yard touchdown run. Bishop’s point after touchdown run was successful and the Broncos lead swelled to 35-0.
Mallett’s run to paydirt from 42 yards with 3:30 remaining in the game made the score 41-0.
Thomas Dukes scored his first varsity touchdown as the aggressive freshman scored on a one yard run. The PAT run failed.
It is Lisbon versus LaMoure week. The Broncos and Lobos renew their rivalry this Friday night at LaMoure on October 10. This game will be different for the two proud football schools. Going into their October 3rd games, the Broncos were healthy at 4-2 but LaMoure LM was winless at 0-6 and the Lobos were to play a very good Milnor – North Sargent squad. Yes, it is possible for LaMoure LM to go winless this season.
The 1A eleven man play-offs begins on Saturday, October 25. The top two teams in each of the four regions will host opening round games and the third and fourth place finishers will travel to the higher seeds home field. Lisbon was in third place with three regular season games remaining. Stay tuned to KQLX sports and the Gazette to follow the opening round play-offs.
If the Broncos and Milnor-North Sargent each win their remaining three games, it will force a three way tie with Linton HMB for the top seed in the play-offs. If Lisbon loses to Linton HMB and wins their last two games, the Broncos will be the number three seed and will be on the road for the first round of the play-offs.
Coach Bubach commented about the Broncos play against Maple Valley – Enderlin, the remaining regular season schedule, and the upcoming play-offs.
“We need to play well at Linton, win or lose, we need to play well.” “Linton is a big game and we will have to contain their quarterback, Purinturn and we need to move the ball against a very good defense.”
“We have a tough opponent at Linton HMB but we also have games remaining with LaMoure and Kindred. I have never won a game as the head football coach of the Broncos at LaMoure and Kindred is for real this season.”
“Our last game of the season should be interesting as we host Kindred on October 17.”
“We improved in areas of our game against the Falcons. Our linebackers did a better job of reading and reacting quicker. Our offensive line did a better job of communicating and making the proper blocks.”
“Dillon Bishop was in on a number of big plays both from the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Bishop and Olerud hooked up to cause two interceptions when Dillon smacked the quarterback.”
“The offensive line led by Brent Durkin did a nice job up front.”
“The biggest play of the game was when Jordan Stenson blocked the punt right before halftime.”
Lisbon played without offensive center, Austin Wimer. Wimer, a junior, broke his hand in the Milnor-North Sargent game.
