Bobcat Company announced Thursday, October 23, 2008, that it will suspend manufacturing production in its Gwinner and Bismarck facilities for 6 weeks, beginning Dec. 15, with operations resuming Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.

These are the only Bobcat facilities affected. The 6-week timeframe excludes a week of normal Bobcat paid holidays from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1, 2009. This action comes as a result of current economic conditions, specifically the downturn in the housing market and crisis in the financial markets.

“Demand for all construction equipment has decreased substantially over the past several months,” said Rich Goldsbury, president, Bobcat Americas. “Other industrial equipment manufacturers have made similar moves recently, including layoffs and the closing of plants.”

The Gwinner and Bismarck Bobcat facilities have approximately 2,000 employees combined. Employees are expected to return to their jobs when manufacturing operations resume.

“By temporarily suspending production, we will give our dealer network an opportunity to move their current inventory before more machines make their way into the market,” Goldsbury said. “Despite the current economic conditions, Bobcat continues to invest significantly in research and development of new technologies and machines to be ready for future demand.”

The Gwinner facility manufactures Bobcat skid-steer, compact track and all-wheel steer loaders. The Bismarck facility manufactures compact excavators, mini track loaders, and Toolcat utility work machines.

Ransom County Sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Jund, 40, Lisbon, was injured when a 2005 Ford pickup sideswiped his 2008 Ford Expedition squad car on Highway 32, 3 miles south of Lisbon on Friday, Oct. 17.

The driver of the pickup was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless endangerment. Shane Reinhart, 35, Lisbon, was northbound on Highway 32 enroute to Lisbon. Deputy Jund was on patrol for the Ransom County Sheriff’s Department at the time and was southbound on Hwy 32.  Reinhart’s vehicle sideswiped the patrol vehicle, according to a report by Sgt. David Wolf, North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at 7:05 p.m. A passenger in the squad car was Lisa Jund, 38, who was participating in a ride-along with her officer husband. Both Junds were wearing seatbelts and their airbags deployed during the accident. Lisa Jund was not injured.  Deputy Jund was transported to Lisbon Area Health Services by First Medic Ambulance  and then life-flighted to MeritCare in Fargo from the airport in Lisbon.

Reinhart and his passenger, Dawn Menning, 39, Lisbon, were not injured in the accident. It is unknown if they were using seatbelts, according to the report.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Ransom County Sheriff’s Department, Lisbon Fire Department, First Medic Ambulance, and Lisbon Police Department all responded to the scene.

Reinhart has since been charged with DUI involving personal injury, a Class B Misdemeanor, and reckless endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor, according to Ransom County State’s Attorney Fallon Kelly. If he is convicted of the DUI involving personal injury he would face a minimum of 90 days in jail.

Jund is in satisfactory condition as of Thursday, October 23, according to MeritCare Hospital.

The accident continues to be under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The North Dakota Faternal Order of Police (NDFOP) has established a fund for the Jund family. Checks made out to NDFOP can be sent to NDFOP Lodge #4, Tracy Jund Donation, P.O. Box 1851, Jamestown, ND 58402. A benefit is planned for 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Expo Center in Lisbon.

The Broncos will celebrate their volleyball parent’s night, tonight (Monday, Oct. 27) against a young and powerful Central Cass squad.  There will be three matches beginning with the C game at 4:45.

Lidgerwood met Lisbon in the Bronco gym on Thursday, Oct. 16.  At stake was the number-one seed in the upcoming District 1 tournament.

The Cardinals came into this match flying.  Lidgerwood boasted an overall record of 26-1 and had recently won the Lisbon–Enderlin tournament, where they had defeated the Broncos 2 games to 1.  If the Cardinals were to defeat the Broncos again, Lidgerwood would be number 1, Wyndmere 2, and Lisbon 3 in the upcoming tournament.

Lisbon was coming off of a solid performance at the prestigious tournament and is the two-time defending Region 1 champion.  If Lisbon were to defeat Lidgerwood, the Broncos would still need to win at Hankinson on October 21 to earn the number-one seed. Read the rest of this entry »

Jessinta Hammer, Kathryn, realized a childhood dream when she was selected as Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2009 on Sunday, October 12.  She entered the competition as Miss Rodeo Thunder Bird Ranch. The competition took place at the Badlands Circuit Final Rodeo in Minot. from Thursday, October 9-Sunday, October 12.

Ever since Lisa Wilm, a family friend, got her interested when she was 13, Hammer wanted to reach the goal of Miss ND Rodeo. Her next goal is to strive to win Miss Rodeo America after she completes her reign in North Dakota. She will be attending the Miss Rodeo America competition in Las Vegas with her dad from November 29 – December 6 to watch Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2008, Lindy Ellis,  as Ellis competes for that title. Hammer describes Ellis as a very nice person.

Another goal is to earn her masters degree in agricultural economics, but that goal is put on hold for the next year. She will pursue it, though, as she has a math mind and is excited about learning the ups and downs of the marketing side of agriculture. Read the rest of this entry »

Garrison Diversion’s Recreation Committee awarded $5,000 to Ransom County Parks & Rec at their semi-annual meeting on October 8 in Carrington. The funds approved for this project will go towards a Recreational Vehicle Park in McLeod, ND.

An RV park will give visitors a place to camp while visiting the Sheyenne National Grasslands.  The project will benefit the community, as well as visitors to the grasslands, a popular destination for tourists, bird watchers, nature enthusiasts, and hunters.

“I’d like to thank the Recreation Committee for approving the grant for McLeod.  The recreation grant program is a good deal, and the grant will be very beneficial for the community,” says Ransom County Director Warren Lyons.

The Recreation Committee approved matching grants for seven projects totaling $77,815 at this meeting.

Garrison Diversion devotes two-tenths of its one-mill levy to the recreation grant program, and the Recreation Committee meets every spring and fall to consider applications. The next deadline for recreation grant applications is April 1, 2009.

The Broncos are on a roll as they headed into the opening round of the 2008 1A football play-offs.  Lisbon has not lost a game since September 19.  LHS has run off four straight victories while piling up 125 points and allowing just six.

Kindred became the Bronco’s seventh victim of the year and fourth regional win as Lisbon pounded the Vikings 31-6 on Friday, Oct. 17.  Lisbon had shut out their last three opponents, but Kindred scored with just 23 seconds remaining to stop Lisbon’s defensive scoreless streak at 15 quarters.

Unfortunately for Lisbon, their first round opponent is Milnor-North Sargent, the team that defeated Lisbon on September 19 by a score of 20-12.  This should have been a great game, and it was played in Gwinner on October 25. (The Gazette goes to press on October 24). Read the rest of this entry »
