kempel pixBarry Neil Kempel, 66, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Friday, October 17th at Sanford USD Medical Center.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Memorial Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery. 

Barry was born June 28, 1942 in Fargo, ND.  He graduated from Lisbon High School, Lisbon, ND, attended NDSU in Fargo, and received a First Class Engineering License at the School of Broadcasting in Burbank, CA.  He served in the ND and SD National Guard.

Barry was united in marriage to Bonnie Mennis on October 24, 1964 in Ft. Ransom, ND.  He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church in Surprise, AZ.

Barry retired in 2002 from the South Dakota Automobile Dealers Association as Director of Services with 25 years of service.  Prior to SDADA, he was with Federated Insurance Company and in radio broadcasting at KGFX in Pierre, SD and KEYD in Oakes, ND.  Throughout his life he enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting golfing, football, cruising on his Harley Davidson and daily coffee gatherings with his buddies. The past six years he and his wife Bonnie enjoyed spending their winters at their home in Surprise, AZ.

Barry is survived by his wife, Bonnie, one brother, Steve (Sheri) Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, JoAnn Weber, Marshall, MN, sister-in-law, Deb (Rick) Gillund, Enderlin, ND, brother-in-law Darrell (Lois) Mennis, Fort Ransom, ND; nieces, Amy Koonce, Nashville, TN, Lindsay and Briana Gillund, Fargo, ND, Jane Zollner, Marshall, MN; nephews, Spencer Gillund, Enderlin, ND, Lynn Mennis, Brookings, SD, Jay Mennis, Madison, SD; aunts and uncles, great nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Rachel Kempel, and a brother-in-law David Weber.

The family wishes that all memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
