Warren Wiltse, Lisbon, was honored as the recipient of the 2009 Ransom County Agriculturist of the Year Award on Tuesday evening, June 23. The annual awards banquet, which is traditionally held in March, was postponed twice this year, first because of inclement weather and then because of the spring flood. The event, which has gone on for 45 consecutive years, is sponsored by the Ransom County Crop and Livestock Improvement Association (RCCLIA).
Anthony Anderson, Lisbon, RCCLIA chairman, opened the association’s annual meeting, which preceded the award ceremony. The main item on the agenda was the annual election of directors. The following were elected to three-year positions on the board: District 2 – Ryan Lyons; At Large – Eric Mairs; and Industry Representative – Gary Geske.
Past Agriculturists of the Year and/or their spouses were recognized. Members of the RCCLIA Board of Directors were introduced. Anderson read the biography of the new award recipient, who was then presented with a plaque.
Warren Wiltse was born at Elliott, ND to Harold and Irene (Pindall) Wiltse. His family farmed several miles northwest of Elliott and Warren attended a Springer Township elementary school. When he was eight years old, the family moved to a farm east of Lisbon. Warren attended Big Bend #2 school, where there were 36 students in eight grades. All grades were taught by one teacher, who, in addition to teaching, also served as janitor. The teacher’s duties included hauling water and feeding the stove. Read the rest of this entry »

Lisbon’s next blood drive will be held on Wednesday, July 1, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.  Generally, most healthy people whose age is at least 16 (a special consent form must be signed by a parent) and weigh at least 110 pounds may donate.  There are quite a few people who do not realize they are qualified to donate.  People who are taking vitamins, hormones, birth control pills, diet pills, or antibiotics (for acne) MAY donate.
Every donor must bring an ID to the blood drive.  Your ID must include your legal name PLUS one of these:  date of birth, social security number, United Blood Services assigned number, or photo.
Donors who are otherwise eligible to donate ARE UNABLE to donate at this drive under the following circumstances:
√ Donors CANNOT be accepted unless they know the name of their medication and the condition for which it is taken;
√ Blood transfusion within the past 12 months;
√ Must wait 1 day after last dosage of antibiotics taken for an infection;
√ Colds and flu:  must be “symptom-free” on the day of donation;
√ Tattoos (unless gotten in South Dakota or North Dakota) defer a donor for 12 months.
“These qualifications may have some effect on persons who plan on donating blood at the next blood drive in Lisbon,” stated blood drive coordinator, Kay Milbrandt.  “We encourage other citizens to take the place of donors unable to give at this time.”  People who have additional questions on donor qualifications or who wish to schedule an appointment may call Kay at 683-4920.

The final community meeting in the process of adopting updated flood insurance rate maps of participating Ransom County communities was held on Monday evening, June 22. A group of approximately two dozen community leaders and area homeowners viewed the new flood plain maps and evaluated and discussed proposed changes with a FEMA representative and a representative of Houston Engineering, Fargo, the engineering firm which has been working on the map updates.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was established in 1968, with the passage of the National Flood Insurance Act. The NFIP is a federal program which makes it possible for property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance as a protection against flood losses in exchange for state and community floodplain management regulations meant to reduce future flood damages.
