A Public Hearing on the special assessments for Phase I of the Lisbon Street, Sewer, and Water project was held at the beginning of the Monday, July 6 City Council meeting. About 8-10  residents were in attendance, in addition to the council members, city attorney, city auditor, city police chief and public works supervisor.
The assessments had been printed in the Gazette for public review. Residents with active water meters may choose to pay $742 up front in one lump sum or pay $57.40 on average per year for fifteen years. Some discussion took place about the high cost of the public’s portion of this project.  The Council listened to complaints but defended the assessment as the fairest way to pay for the project. The public hearing was adjourned and the regular city council meeting was called to order. Read the rest of this entry »

The United States Census Bureau is issuing a call to action for every resident of the nation: “Be Counted in 2010.”
The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States, people of all races, and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens. The Constitution requires a census every ten years.
The census data is important for other reasons besides just being counted. Every year, the federal government can allocate more than $300 billion to states and communities based, in part, on census date. Census data guide planning for new hospitals, roads, job training centers, schools and more. The information gathered determines the need for additional social services, block grants, and other grant programs essential to many communities. Census data may justify the need for an after -school program  or show the need for urban revitalization.
The 2010 Census Questionnaire has only ten questions  and takes approximately ten minutes to fill out.
By law census information cannot be shared with anyone.
Census employees have been going door to door to update addresses.
In the fall of 2009 recruitment will begin for census takers to do the work necessary to collect the data. Some of it will be knocking on doors and some will be making phone calls.
In the spring of 2010 census forms will be mailed or delivered to households.
The official designated Census Day is Thursday, April 1.
