No one visiting the Maple River Dam, located approximately eight miles northeast of Lisbon, would know that, only a few months ago, the water had nearly reached the top of the spillway and spread out over a wide area of the countryside. However, by taking a closer look, one can see where the brown shaded ground cover, where the water once stood, reaches the brighter green grass above.
The water, at its high point this spring, filled the spillway, with the force of the water spraying water over the spillway’s upper wall. The dam, which controls floodwater from a 900-square-mile watershed, has 60,000 acre-feet of flood-water storage. At full capacity, it would temporarily inundate 2,800 acres of land.
The dam consists of a 70-foot high earthen embankment. The “dry dam” stores flood-water immediately after a flood, but empties, automatically, once flood waters recede, through its spillway system. Read the rest of this entry »

The architectural sketch shows the pod design of the new North Dakota Veterans Home. One pod will be skilled care and two pods will house residents on basic care. Each pod has a shared living room with fireplace, a shared dining room, and individual rooms with restrooms. The central pod will be where offices are and special events held. The design promotes a more family-like atmosphere for the residents.

Construction of a new North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, is progressing after being delayed by increased costs which resulted in a new bid to the legislature, an extended federal deadline, and a flood fight.
Groundbreaking was held on June 7, 2008, after the original cost of $25.6 million was approved by the 2007 Legislative Assembly. However, in September, bids for the work at the home came in approximately $6 million over the estimated cost which had been approved. This prompted numerous trips to the 2009 Legislative Assembly by the NDVH administration to plea for more money to complete the project. Read the rest of this entry »

A year ago, the football teams from Lisbon and Milnor-North Sargent engaged in two dandy hard knocking games. The first round, that was played at Sandager Field, went to the Bulldogs and earned MNS a first-round home game in the play-offs. A Zach Peterson one-yard run and a valiant goal-line stand earned Lisbon a 6-0 victory in the first round of the playoffs.
Lisbon head football coach Robert Bubach said before this year’s scrimmage, “On the bus ride down here to Gwinner, I am much more relaxed. This will be a great learning experience for all of our players. It is great that Erik Olson, Bulldog head coach, agreed to this scrimmage, as MNS again will be very good and we will see where we are weak and will have a week of preparation to correct our mistakes before the LaMoure game.” Read the rest of this entry »

Twenty schools competed in their first meet of the season.
The West Fargo girls’ and the Grand Forks Central boys’ squads easily won the team titles. The Packer girls totaled just 32 points to easily outdistance runner-up Fargo South’s total of 63.
In the boy’s division, Central’s low total of 58 left West Fargo in the dust with their low five-runner total of 124. The Bronco boy’s total of 291 earned LHS 12th place and third overall behind the B schools of Valley City (203) and New Town (231). Read the rest of this entry »
