Although continuous rains in Lisbon have caused delays in the construction of the new North Dakota Veterans Home by more than two weeks, the $31 million project has made progress. “The exterior of the skilled unit and the central core is nearly complete,” said Mark Johnson, administrator, North Dakota Veterans Home.
The plan is to have the Home completely enclosed before winter, but pooling water caused by days of rain has kept the concrete floors from being poured in the south section of  the project. However, the floors have been poured in all other sections of the building and steel walls and some steel trusses have been set in place. The steel walls were constructed during the summer of 2009 and left in stacks ready to place. Quite a large crew comes in and places those walls and trusses so they go up fast, according to Johnson.
“If the weather cooperates for a few days, the trusses should all be up by next week,” said Johnson. Read the rest of this entry »

Senior Michele Hoistad was moved from an outside hitting position to the middle, and Bronco Coach Amy Lyons has not lost her Midas touch.  Hoistad has become much more aggressive in her hitting and the Bronco offense has become more diversified in their offensive attack.
Lisbon closed its District 1 regular season schedule with an impressive road win over Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah. The Broncos outscored the host Rebels 75-45 and had three girls record impressive hitting nights.
Susie Lyons was credited with 30 setting assists, and Kali Olson, Hillary Birchem, and Michele Hoistad slammed the ball home for a point a total of 34 times.  At times, the FCT defenders set up the Broncos’ offense.  Birchem has her first career double in kills with 10, and season leader, Kali Olson recorded 16 while Hoistad claimed 8. They put the S630 Bobcat through its paces.
Staff from Construction Equipment, an industry trade journal, came to Fargo Oct. 13 through Oct. 15 to pit the new generation machine against an older and larger model Bobcat, the S220, which is still being sold.
“(The question is) what will the machine do, and can the machine do it in a certain amount of time,” said Larry Stewart, executive editor of Construction Equipment.
The magazine, which has a circulation of 75,000, goes to various owners of construction equipment. Stewart compared the magazine to Car and Driver – but for the construction world.
“We have a history of being the only third party evaluator of construction equipment in the market,” he said in a telephone interview.
Field testing like this doesn’t happen often. The last time Construction Equipment conducted a field test of a Bobcat was in 2002, Stewart said. Read the rest of this entry »

Just four days after losing a hard-fought battle with Wahpeton at Sandager Park, the Bronco football team and its fans were cheering on the Huskies in their game with Valley City.  Lisbon needed to help themselves with a win at Kindred and looked to the Huskies to defeat the Hi-Liners.  The combination of victories by Lisbon and Wahpeton would propel the Broncos into the play-offs.  Mission accomplished in Kindred as the Broncos blanked the Vikings 49-0.  Wahpeton, the #1-ranked team in the state, also posted a shut-out with their 40-0 win over Valley City.  The loss eliminated the Hi-Liners from post season play.  A year ago, Valley City lost to Watford City in the AA championship game.  The Wolves will also not be back in the AA championship game as Watford is playing in the A division class this year.
The Broncos entered the 8-team AA play-off field as the number four seed from the east with a record of 6-3.  Dickinson Trinity is the number one seed from the west and the Titans are ranked number two in the state and boast a record of 8-0.  The Titans and Broncos have faced each other three times with Trinity winning all three encounters. Longtime Northwood coach and athletic director, John Hutchison, was asked recently by the Grand Forks Herald to predict the East Region cross country meet that was held in Cooperstown on Saturday, October 17.  Hutch predicted that Griggs County led by Taylor Palmer and Maggie Moen would not win any individual races but would lead the Cougars to a team championship.
Hutchison also predicted that the Rugby boys would win their second straight title and that one of four individual runners would grab the gold in the boy’s division, and Griggs County would dominate the girl’s division.  Dylan Yoder of Rugby, Bridger Belzer of North Star, Anthony Askew of Cavalier, and Adam Monson of Hatton-Northwood-Thompson have taken turns in beating each other up all year and each is capable of winning it.
Take Hutchison with you the next time you fly to Vegas.  His predictions were right on as Bridger Belzer made his move one mile into the race and ran away from the rest of the 18 school field, and Griggs County and Rugby dominated their divisions. Read the rest of this entry »

A good crowd was on hand for the open house, dedication, and ribbon-cutting ceremony which was held at the newly renovated Parkside Lutheran Home on Sunday afternoon, October 11. In addition to the tours and the ribbon cutting ceremony, the name of the home’s new basic care wing was announced. It will be called the Jim and Millie Dick Homestead Acres Wing in honor of the Englevale couple’s dedication to the work and expansion of the home as well as their financial support.
The afternoon’s program began with Administrator Tim Kennedy welcoming the large group of people on hand for the dedication ceremony. Kennedy recognized the current board members, who include: Nick Storhaug, president; Cindy Stetson, vice-president; Pastor Norm Anderson, Patty Carlblom, Jim Dick, Dan Olson,  Kenny Olson, Elmer Lindstrom, Laurie Olerud, and Edie Reinke.
Kennedy introduced Pastor Norm Anderson of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon, who is also a long-time member of the Parkside Board of Directors. Anderson began his remarks by comparing Parkside Home to “The Little Engine That Could.” He explained that when the board began discussing a possible renovation of the facility, its members questioned whether they would be able to accomplish what they desired. However, since that time, by thinking the goal could be reached, the community has made their dream a reality. Read the rest of this entry »

After it was announced at the Parkside Lutheran Home open house/ribbon-cutting ceremony that the new basic care wing at the facility was being named the Jim and Millie Dick Homestead Acres Wing, Jim Dick was asked to say a few words.
His first remarks were that he was very surprised. He commented that he did not believe that he and his wife were deserving of the honor. There were many present who disagreed.
In an interview a couple of days after receiving the honor, Dick stated that he did not want the emphasis put on him, but felt the focus should be on the future of the home.
He went on to explain that, at the time he accepted a position on the board, which was eleven years ago, the home was basically financially “insolvent.” He is proud to say that it has fought its way back from that situation and is now on the brink of a new start with a newly renovated and expanded facility with a completely new and improved atmosphere.
