I met Alberta one winter day, a number years ago at her house. I think it was when I was trying to establish a trail format for the Heart of Gold endurance ride in the area. We had a very good conversation and she inspired a character (quite an interesting one, I think) for a novel I am still contemplating as well as a song that I have written, entitled, Traveler’s Lament. Am currently in the process of recording it.
I’ve included the lyrics below (they’re also available at http://theprimativesrock.wordpress.com/song-lyrics/:
Traveler’s Lament
jesse s. hanson
When I came down off the prairie
with the burning in my bones
you were just about to marry
your fingers full of stones
he called out and said “please come back,
I’ll love you to the end.”
you turned back and said “no doubt,
and after that….. what then?”
When they see us riding in the distance,
run and tell their friends
but they’ve got their minds, too much resistance
and we disappear again
and they call out and say, “please come back,
I’ll go with you to the end.”
but we turn back and say “no doubt,
and after that….. what then?”
If the day is done and a new world’s come
and waylaid these misty dreams
and with my heart like a broken drum
and this song that’s left unsung, for me
If you won’t return my concern
and put my mind to rest
and if I have to take my turn
I suppose I’ll have to learn this hard test
She let us make our camp in the meadow
her place to the north
last winter made her a poor widow
but she is holding forth
and she calls out, says “please come back,
I’ll grieve you to the end.”
he turns back and says “no doubt,
but after that….. what then?”
