*Grand Forks Red River won their 11th straight East Region A girls tennis championship. The Roughriders winning streak has stretched to 133 consecutive victories dating back to a loss in 2001 to Bismarck Century.

*The Fargo Marathon had 22,000 entrants in its seventh year of existence in races that started on Thursday and ended on Saturday.

Marvin LeRoy Kollman, 91, Bismarck, died on May 21, 2011 at Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, surrounded by family. A funeral service was held Wednesday, May 25 at Bismarck Funeral Home, with Rev. This tick season, the North Dakota Department of health (NDDoH) encourages residents to take measures to avoid tick bites and the potential for serious tick-borne diseases.

“Tick-borne diseases such as tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease can be prevented by taking some basic precautions to avoid tick bites,” said Michelle Feist, epidemiologist with the Department of Health’s Division of Disease Control. “Areas that are heavily wooded or have tall grass or brush are more likely to be infested with ticks, especially between April and September, with the highest risk of disease transmission occurring during the warmer months.” Read the rest of this entry »

Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are preparing for the Memorial Day holiday through increased seat belt enforcement to assure traveling motorists arrive at their destinations safely.  As part of national Click It or Ticket efforts, the increased enforcement period will run from Monday, May 23rd through Sunday, June 5th, 2011. *NDSU has now won 15 of the 16 Summitt League track and field championships since the Bison joined the conference four years ago.  The NDSU women are a perfect eight for eight with four first place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor championships.

The Bison have won all four indoor meets and three of a possible four outdoor championships.

*The University of Minnesota Moorhead men and the Augustana women won the NSIC outdoor track championships.

Evie Quinnell

Eveline (Evie) M. Quinnell, 82, Bismarck (formerly Lisbon), passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 surrounded by her loving family after a battle with cancer.  Services were held Saturday, May 14 at Grace Lutheran Brethren Church,  503 N. 24th Street, Bismarck, with the Rev. Lorraine Black

Lorraine Dorothy Elvina Weigelt Schossow Black, 84, of Enderlin, formerly Sheldon, passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin.

She was born March 17, 1926 in Wheatland, the daughter of Henry and Wilma Weigelt.

She married Robert A. Schossow on March 24, 1947 in Embden. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1952. She later married Curtis R. Black on Jan.5, 1954 in Sheldon.   Read the rest of this entry »
