Dan Wiltse Dan Wiltse, 58, Lisbon was tragically taken from his family and friends in a farm accident on Thursday, October 22nd, 2009.
Funeral service was held Monday, October 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisbon.  Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.  The Armstrong Funeral Home of Lisbon was in charge of the arrangements.
Daniel Warren Wiltse, son of  Warren and Betty (Froemke) Wiltse of Lisbon, was born on August 14th, 1951 in Fargo, ND.  Raised on the family farm just east of Lisbon, he attended 1st grade at Big Bend country school and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1969.  Dan attended  NDSU and the University of Minnesota-Crookston where he earned an associate degree in agriculture.  After college he returned to  Lisbon to farm with his father.  On November 10th, 1979 he married Gaye Lynn Weisgram  and they moved  to the family farm.  When his father retired in 1982 he took over the  farming operation.
Dan was passionate about farming and loved every aspect of it.  Throughout the years Dan was active in almost every farming organization there was.  He was a member of the ND Barley Council where he served  as district III director from 1993-1999, vice-chairman from 1994-1996 and chairman from 1996-1998.   He served on the board of directors of the National Barley Growers Association, vice-president from 1997-1999, president from 1999-2001, a current Ransom County Representative and he testified in congress on behalf of this committee in 1997; He was the current Chairman of the Northern Crops Institute, a member of ND Oilseed Council since 2005 where he currently is serving as vice-president; member of the National Sunflower Association since 2005 and currently serving as 2nd vice-president of the board of directors,  of which he is the chair of the NSA blackbird committee and is a major force in purchasing plot equipment for research; a Mycogen seed dealer, current secretary of Agricultural Appointment for the USDA Wildlife Service; Advisory Committee where he has been a member since 2006; member of the US Feed Grains Association.
Other organizations  that he has been involved with include the Ransom County Farmers Union as a member and board member, voting member of the Agricultural Research Fund for sunflowers from 2008-2009; Soybean yield trail program in 2007; US Grains Council where he attended a NAFTA trip in 1993 and he often attended AG groups breakfasts at the State Capitol
Dan’s full circle of life included  involvement in his beloved community of Lisbon. As a young man, he loved to race Stock cars and was an excellent mechanic.   He was highly respected and sought after for his common sense and wisdom.  He enjoyed participation in the Lisbon Jaycees, Lisbon Dollars for Scholars, and most importantly his life-long membership and involvement of Lisbon’s First Baptist Church.
Although  his chosen career was important, it paled in comparison to his love and devotion to his wife, children and grandchildren.   Nothing made him  happier than spending his free time attending their games, snowmobiling, go-carting, camping or taking them to special places and events.
Dan is survived by his wife Gaye; daughters Brandi Griffith of Lisbon, Buffee (Justin) Barta of Fargo; a son Dustin of Fargo; grandchildren Hunter, Kayne, Sydney and Thane; his parents Warren and Betty Wiltse; brother Jon (Kathy) of Lisbon; sisters Mary (Bernie) Hall of Harvey, and Becky (Joe) Suchla of Fargo; his mother-in-law Elga Weisgram of Lisbon;  brothers-in-law Joel (Kay) Weisgram of West Fargo and Douglas (Margie) Weisgram of Fox Island, Washington and many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and relatives who were dear to him.

Although continuous rains in Lisbon have caused delays in the construction of the new North Dakota Veterans Home by more than two weeks, the $31 million project has made progress. “The exterior of the skilled unit and the central core is nearly complete,” said Mark Johnson, administrator, North Dakota Veterans Home.
The plan is to have the Home completely enclosed before winter, but pooling water caused by days of rain has kept the concrete floors from being poured in the south section of  the project. However, the floors have been poured in all other sections of the building and steel walls and some steel trusses have been set in place. The steel walls were constructed during the summer of 2009 and left in stacks ready to place. Quite a large crew comes in and places those walls and trusses so they go up fast, according to Johnson.
“If the weather cooperates for a few days, the trusses should all be up by next week,” said Johnson. Read the rest of this entry »

Senior Michele Hoistad was moved from an outside hitting position to the middle, and Bronco Coach Amy Lyons has not lost her Midas touch.  Hoistad has become much more aggressive in her hitting and the Bronco offense has become more diversified in their offensive attack.
Lisbon closed its District 1 regular season schedule with an impressive road win over Fairmount-Campbell-Tintah. The Broncos outscored the host Rebels 75-45 and had three girls record impressive hitting nights.
Susie Lyons was credited with 30 setting assists, and Kali Olson, Hillary Birchem, and Michele Hoistad slammed the ball home for a point a total of 34 times.  At times, the FCT defenders set up the Broncos’ offense.  Birchem has her first career double in kills with 10, and season leader, Kali Olson recorded 16 while Hoistad claimed 8. They put the S630 Bobcat through its paces.
Staff from Construction Equipment, an industry trade journal, came to Fargo Oct. 13 through Oct. 15 to pit the new generation machine against an older and larger model Bobcat, the S220, which is still being sold.
“(The question is) what will the machine do, and can the machine do it in a certain amount of time,” said Larry Stewart, executive editor of Construction Equipment.
The magazine, which has a circulation of 75,000, goes to various owners of construction equipment. Stewart compared the magazine to Car and Driver – but for the construction world.
“We have a history of being the only third party evaluator of construction equipment in the market,” he said in a telephone interview.
Field testing like this doesn’t happen often. The last time Construction Equipment conducted a field test of a Bobcat was in 2002, Stewart said. Read the rest of this entry »

Just four days after losing a hard-fought battle with Wahpeton at Sandager Park, the Bronco football team and its fans were cheering on the Huskies in their game with Valley City.  Lisbon needed to help themselves with a win at Kindred and looked to the Huskies to defeat the Hi-Liners.  The combination of victories by Lisbon and Wahpeton would propel the Broncos into the play-offs.  Mission accomplished in Kindred as the Broncos blanked the Vikings 49-0.  Wahpeton, the #1-ranked team in the state, also posted a shut-out with their 40-0 win over Valley City.  The loss eliminated the Hi-Liners from post season play.  A year ago, Valley City lost to Watford City in the AA championship game.  The Wolves will also not be back in the AA championship game as Watford is playing in the A division class this year.
The Broncos entered the 8-team AA play-off field as the number four seed from the east with a record of 6-3.  Dickinson Trinity is the number one seed from the west and the Titans are ranked number two in the state and boast a record of 8-0.  The Titans and Broncos have faced each other three times with Trinity winning all three encounters.
